Revelation: A Book of Comfort
In the last century and the beginning of this century, the
idea of Jesus rapturing his church before a great time of tribulation and
leaving the lost behind has dominated the popular mind with books like The
Late Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsey and the Left Behind book
series by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye which focus on the rapture of the
church. (see the Rapture Manifesto below). This whole approach to thinking is
rather new to church history, but it has captivated the Western and by
extension the East way of thinking about eschatology. Revelation, along with
other prooftext, has been used to forge this mindset.
But, is that point of view what John meant when he wrote the
book of Revelation? Was he forcasting the events that you read about in
USAToday! or other international newspapers? If he read what was being written
today, would he believe it?
